The trip was a great success with everyone in agreement that it had only highlighted further the importance of the work being undertaken and the need for greater investment.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE TEA BAG ~ 100 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The saviour of the tea industry has reached its centenary but it came about unintentionally.

The sachet that transformed the tea industry

A hundred years ago, Thomas Sullivan, a New York coffee merchant, sent his customers silk sachets of loose leaf tea as samples of his new product. However the customers didn’t open them, as intended, and proceeded to put them straight in to the hot water. It was an immediate hit with tea drinkers across the U.S.

It was a considerable time before the sachet arrrived in Britain and it eventually made it’s debut in 1953. This new approach to tea making was not embraced at the time. With the modern lifestyle becoming ever busier, attitudes began to change and the tea bag became  more in demand due to its speed and convenience.

Today 96% of the 130 million cups of tea drunk in Britain everyday are made using tea bags.
