This Wednesday, BBC One will broadcast Rowing the Arctic, a 1 hour documentary by Scots adventurer Mark Beaumont, which tells the story of the landmark Old Pulteney Row to the Pole expedition.
Last August, Mark joined polar veteran Jock Wishart’s six man crew - which included Imporient ambassador Billy Gammon - in an audacious attempt to row to the 1996 certified Magnetic North Pole. Despite overwhelming odds and hazardous close encounters with fast-flowing sea ice and wild polar bears, the crew reached their objective in the final days of the summer season.
As an official partner of the Old Pulteney Row to the Pole expedition, we are proud that our Premium Blend Tea was the official tea of the expedition and, to coincide with BBC’s broadcast and to celebrate the crew’s historic achievement, we are giving away a Special Souvenir Edition of Furthest North, the official book of the expedition by Rod McCrae, FREE with all orders placed on our web site this month.
Rowing the Arctic is on BBC One on 25 April at 22:45.

Imporient is celebrating this week after winning multiple accolades at the 2011-2012 Great Taste Awards. The independent, London-based tea company underlined its burgeoning reputation as one of the world’s leading producers of black tea by scooping best-in-class honours across the category.
Imporient’s flagship Premium Blend Tea was the top performing black tea in both the ‘blended tea, loose’ and ‘blended tea, tea bags’ classes, whilst its Pfunda Rwandan Tea headed the rankings for ’single estate tea, loose’ and ’single estate tea, tea bags’.
Daniel Graham, Managing Director of Imporient, said “We should have entered The Great Taste Awards years ago! We are absolutely delighted to have won these Gold awards as they back up what our customers already know about our teas. We’re especially thrilled that our very own Pfunda Rwandan tea topped the single estate tea class as this would have made our ancestors very proud indeed.”
Bob Farrand, Chairman for The Great Taste Awards, said ”Winning Gold in the country’s largest and most respected independent food accreditation scheme is a massive pat on the back for any producer - independent proof their products are of the highest quality.”
The Great Taste Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, are now into their 18th year and going from strength to strength. In 2011, 7481 products were entered by 1600 companies and were subject to judging standards deemed to be the most rigorous in the UK. It took 350 experts 34 days to blind taste all the entries and decide which would achieve the coveted gold awards.
Imporient is pleased to announce that the Pfunda Tea Estate has become the first tea garden in Rwanda to earn certification from the Rainforest Alliance, after meeting the organisation’s stringent set of criteria balancing ecological, economic and social considerations.
“We are delighted that Rwanda’s Pfunda Tea Estate has become the first tea plantation in Rwanda to earn Rainforest Alliance certification,” said Tensie Whelan, president of the Rainforest Alliance. “This achievement reflects growing consumer demand for sustainably produced goods across the globe. Through meeting the comprehensive standards of Rainforest Alliance certification, Pfunda Tea Estate has demonstrated its commitment to conserving the environment and improving the lives of farm workers, their families and the local community.”
Daniel Graham, Managing Director of Imporient, said “Obtaining RFA certification in February is the icing on the cake and we are very proud to be the first company in Rwanda in any industry to achieve Rainforest Alliance Certification. A huge effort and a great deal of hard work has gone into earning the accreditation which was achieved in just 8 months. The short time it took us to achieve accreditation speaks volumes about the relationship and co-operation we enjoy with our smallholders but also confirms that our practices prior to certification were already of a very high standard.”
